Policy C17 - The Ridderrenn Team

Purpose

To maintain the relationship between Ski for Light, Inc. and the Ridderrenn.

Policy

In order to maintain the ongoing relationship between Ski for Light and the Ridderrenn, and to emphasize the importance of SFL's Norwegian heritage, SFL will annually sponsor a team of skiers and guides to attend the Ridderrenn in Norway as official representatives of SFL. Sponsorship shall include reasonably priced round-trip airfare to Oslo, transportation in Norway to and from the airport, Oslo team hotel, and Ridderrenn host hotel; up to two night's lodging at the Oslo team hotel before the event; room and meals for seven nights at the Ridderrenn host hotel; all Ridderrenn participation fees, and; lodging for up to three nights at the team hotel in Oslo after the Ridderrenn. Team members will be responsible for the cost of their own meals and tour expenses in Oslo.

Size of the Team and Selection of Team Members

The team will normally be composed of two visually- and/or mobility-impaired skiers and two guides, unless the Board approves a smaller or larger number of members.

Prior to the fall board meeting, the Executive Committee will:

• Review finances and determine the appropriate size of the team for the upcoming Ridderrenn. This size will be recommended to the Board for their approval during the fall Board meeting.
• Select team members and alternates.

At the beginning of each Event, the Executive Committee will review a preliminary list of team candidates for the following year, and during the week endeavor to meet and learn more about the candidates.

The basic screening criteria for consideration of team member candidates are:

• Must have attended at least two SFL events in the past and be planning to attend the upcoming event.
• Must be a resident of the United States.
• Must be at least an intermediate level skier or guide, preferably capable of completing the 20k Ridderrenn course.
• Must be capable of representing SFL as an ambassador in Norway.
• Must not have been a member of the official team in the past.

The additional criteria for selection to the team for guides, are:

• Must either have a long history of service to SFL as a guide, or
• Must be actively supporting the work of SFL as a committee or Board member.

The additional criteria for selection to the team for visually- or mobility- impaired skiers, are:

• Must be either actively supporting the work of SFL as a committee or Board member, or
• Must have the potential to contribute to the work of SFL in the future, if sufficiently motivated to do so.
• Longevity of participation without involvement does not qualify a candidate for selection.

Selection to the team is therefore a reward for guides, while it can be either a reward or a motivator for visually- or mobility-impaired skiers.

Team member candidates will be contacted after the Board has approved the size of the team, by members of the Executive Committee. If a candidate is unavailable or unwilling to participate, he/she will be replaced by an alternate and that person will be next contacted.

The final list of team members will be kept confidential until announced during the SFL event.
