About Communicable Diseases and the Ski for Light International Week
Communicable diseases such as (but not limited to) influenza, RSV and COVID-19 (hereinafter disease) are serious viruses that can led to illness, chronic syndromes, disability, or even death. Such viruses are extremely contagious and can be passed from one person to another, especially in group settings.
All federal, state and county guidelines and recommendations regarding communicable disease will be followed during the Ski for Light International week, and each attendee is expected to follow any such guidelines or requirements. Guidelines and requirements will be communicated to all accepted applicants via e-mail prior to the start of the event, and to those in attendance at the event via an announcement at the start of the event.
The Ski for Light International Week is a group activity with close contact between individuals coming from around the world. As many as 300 people may be attending, and many group interactions will occur, including transportation between the Salt Lake City airport and the Marriott Hotel in Provo, transportation between the Marriott Hotel in Provo and the Soldier Hollow cross-country ski area in Midway, all three meals during the day, morning and afternoon meetings, and late afternoon and evening activities.
The skiing portion of the week includes the pairing of each visually, or mobility-impaired, skier with an experienced sighted, able-bodied ski guide for the week. As a pair, they ski together both mornings and afternoons, from Monday through Saturday.
In addition to cross-country skiing, there are other recreational opportunities available to event attendees, all of them involving group interaction.
If the applicant requests a double-occupancy room for the week, he/she will be paired with another adult of the same gender that he/she may or may not know. There will also be of necessity interactions with employees at the airport, transportation companies, event hotel and the ski area and possibly other employees, patrons and/or volunteers.
Anyone exposed to or testing positive to a communicable disease within one week prior to the start of the event is asked to stay home and not attend the event.
Anyone testing positive to a communicable disease while attending the event will be asked to self-quarantine and remain apart from the group for the duration of the week.
In spite of the foregoing, the unavoidable risk exists that any attendee at the 2025 Ski for Light International week could become exposed to and infected with a communicable disease by participating in the event. In spite of our best efforts to keep everyone safe and healthy, participating in the 2025 Ski for Light international week could result in illness, sickness, infection, or another undesirable health condition from these contagious diseases.
